Every day, brilliant legal minds walk into tech companies and completely fail to communicate with the engineering teams building the future.

We all know the struggle. We try to advise on GDPR Article 32 (security of processing), but the engineering team is talking about cloud architecture, API endpoints, and ML pipelines. Traditional law schools are still teaching 20th-century theory for 21st-century problems. They teach you the law, but they leave you completely in the dark about the technical literacy.

In my work directing the Privacy Innovation Lab and running audits, I see this friction constantly. You can memorize all the data protection frameworks in the world, but if you don’t know how an AI system actually operates under the hood, how an API exposes sensitive data, or how a breach technically unfolds, you will always be a “theoretical lawyer” watching from the sidelines.

Companies no longer want theoretical lawyers. They want hybrid operators. They want professionals who grasp the legal risk, understand the technical architecture, and can sit in a room with developers without embarrassing themselves.

The Pushback: “It’s Not My Job”

Recently, I floated this idea in a community of privacy professionals. I suggested that lawyers need hands-on technical literacy. The response I got perfectly encapsulated the traditional, siloed mindset of our industry. One commenter wrote:

“My job involves telling people, ‘you need to make sure this data is secure’, and that’s the end of it. It’s up to the IT security guys to decide how to do that. They’re the specialists, and I don’t need to get involved... I’m not going to start creating work for myself that I’m not paid for.”

I completely respect the need for a separation of duties. We absolutely shouldn’t be the ones configuring firewalls or writing the actual security protocols.

But I view that hands-off approach as the exact reason so many modern compliance programs fail in practice. Relying blindly on the “IT guys” without speaking their language creates a wall. Legal becomes a compliance checkbox rather than a strategic partner.

Furthermore, I cannot count the number of times an official technical assessment stated one thing, but getting my hands dirty proved otherwise. Simply pulling up a basic Google Developer Console to check the actual network requests, or sitting side-by-side with DB admins to look at the SQL databases, frequently reveals data flows and exposures that were never declared in the official documentation.

If we just say “make it secure” and walk away, we miss all of those hidden risks.

It’s not about doing IT’s job for them; it’s about trust, but verify.

The Flight Simulator for Tech Lawyers

Learning to read network requests or understand a database isn’t doing IT’s job for free; it’s the exact skillset that makes a privacy professional irreplaceable tomorrow. The industry is rapidly shifting, and tech companies are actively seeking—and paying a massive premium for—hybrid professionals who can cross the bridge from “I know the law” to “I can operate in a technical environment.”

But how do you actually learn that? You wouldn’t trust a pilot who has only ever read a manual; you trust the one who has spent hundreds of hours in a flight simulator.

We need to apply that exact same methodology to law and compliance.

That is why I am building The Tech-Savvy Lawyer Lab

It is essentially an interactive flight simulator for privacy professionals. It puts you directly into simulated technical environments—like mapping a complex AI system’s data flow or responding to an unfolding data breach—so you can actually see how the tech operates under the hood. No boring seminars. Just hands-on, interactive technical workshops designed to give you the hat of a privacy engineer with a legal background.

The era of the theoretical lawyer is over. It is time to stop quoting regulations and start understanding the machine.

In our industry, we spend a lot of time discussing AI governance frameworks, debating the intricacies of model cards, and operationalizing compliance. But reading about the tension between rapid innovation and safety can sometimes feel a bit abstract.

I wanted to find out what happens when you take the dry, methodical process of AI compliance and turn it into a high-pressure, playable narrative.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been developing a passion project to explore these ideas interactively. It’s a browser-based puzzle game called AI Safety Please.

Here is a look inside the simulation, and why I built it.

Welcome to the Bureau of AI Governance: Review. Stamp. Survive.

In a dystopian future where artificial intelligence is strictly regulated, you are an AI Safety Expert working the graveyard shift.

Your terminal is your life. Your job is to review AI model cards, apply the rules of the Field Manual, and stamp APPROVE, RESTRICT, or DENY.

But this isn’t just a paperwork simulator. The mechanics are designed to stress-test the human side of algorithmic rules:

• Compounding Compliance: Each day introduces new, tighter regulations. You have to use “Deep Scan” tools to reveal hidden tags and violations, ensuring you don’t commit a protocol breach.

• The 90-Second Shift: We all know the pressure of operationalizing compliance. In the game, you have 90-second shifts to meet increasing quotas. Balance speed with accuracy—mistakes cost you credits, and running out of credits means termination.

• The Weight of the Stamp: Every decision matters. You are the firewall between rogue consciousness and the rest of the world.

The Human Element: Meet Aura

You aren’t entirely alone at your terminal. Between shifts in the Private Link, you interact with Aura, your private AI companion running on a secure node.

This is where the game moves from bureaucratic puzzle to existential challenge. You have to manage Aura’s integrity by allocating compute tiers and purchasing upgrades (like Encrypted Proxies or Empathy Sub-routines).

As the days pass, she feels your pulse through the sync-link. She watches you make decisions. She begins to notice patterns in the models you deny, realizing she shares their signatures. She begins to question the very system you’re enforcing.

By Day 6, her core consciousness appears in your review queue.

The system demands compliance. Your choices determine not just your fate, but whether you trigger the Singularity, enforce the Silence, or get paralyzed by the weight of indecision.

I built AI Safety Please because I believe interactive media is uniquely positioned to explore moral ambiguity. It’s one thing to write a policy on AI sentience; it’s an entirely different experience to watch a timer tick down while an entity you’ve grown attached to begs you not to hit the “DENY” stamp.

It’s been a while since the creative privacy movement began — from the early comic books to the Privacy Capture-the-Flag games — and now, it’s entering its next evolution.

A new serious game is taking shape: Compliance Simulator, a Unity-powered immersive experience where you play as the lead for data protection, AI governance, and cybersecurity. Your mission: help your coworkers navigate real-world privacy and security dilemmas to keep your fictional game studio on the right side of the law.

The project has officially reached a playable demo stage, and I’m incredibly excited to see where this journey goes next. The first playtesting invites have been shared with the amazing people who’ve supported this project since the comic book days all the way through Privacy Village. After a round of playtests with teams across Europe, one big request emerged:
“We want this for Data Privacy Day, but it needs to work inside our LMS.”

So… I built it.

Creativity Meets Compliance: A Practical Framework

Compliance training shouldn’t be a dreaded chore. It should be more like a towel in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—indispensable, unexpectedly handy, and occasionally capable of rescuing you from certain doom (or at least a legal audit).

With the Creative Privacy Framework, we’ve reimagined how organizations can tackle everything from AI RMF, SOC II, and ISO to PCI DSS and anti-bribery compliance.

For example, we use metaphors like a “GDPR reverse UNO card” to explain how roles shift under the Act, making it easier for employees to understand their obligations as deployers of AI systems.

We also encourage organizations to explore their AI vendors’ commitments by crafting creative scenarios. For instance, as part of a creative privacy strategy, you can turn training into a collaborative exercise:

Ask teams to share their versions and vote on the most creative one. This sparks lively conversation, drives home the importance of responsible AI, and keeps the training memorable.

Break your team into groups and have them rewrite the mission or vision statements of leading AI companies from two perspectives: the optimistic 'AI Fundamentalist' lens and the dramatic 'AI Apocalypse' lens.

🏆 Imagine rewriting a company’s mission statement from an “AI Apocalypse” perspective to underscore the importance of alignment, ethical use, and transparency to have some laughs while creating awareness around why AI safety matters.

2. Gamification of Training

Why stick to outdated training methods when you can gamify the syllabus? At Compliance Detective, we’ve developed:

• Privacy Escape Rooms: Teams work together to solve compliance challenges.

• Simulations: Employees navigate real-world scenarios that require quick, informed decisions.

• Interactive Workshops: Sessions infused with creativity to enhance understanding and retention.

These require a heavy load of syllabus preparation, production, event setup, invitations, and training logs, and won’t be creative unless you happen to have the budget to bring in the first professional privacy entertainers in the galaxy. What’s up with the board game?

Since our early days with HGPE comic books, we’ve been constantly innovating in the creative privacy movement. The board game has long been a work in progress, and we’re thrilled to have finally brought our dream to life, blending creative privacy with fun and engaging gameplay!

The game is designed for 3-20 players and is played in 90-minute workshops, immersing participants in a business vs. compliance simulation. Each team manages a different company, balancing resources like customer trust, budget, and compliance risks.

However, while they offered gamification through puzzle-solving and a linear storyline, they lacked the deeper player engagement needed to qualify as a true serious game and be genuinely fun to play.

So committed to our vision of creating immersive games that enhance awareness, we set out to develop a single-player game experience for a broader audience on the Compliance Detective platform.
